Rickshaw Ballet

In Dhaka Wrånes held a workshop about composition with a focus on sound in movement, and  sixteen performance artists from Bangladesh participated. Wrånes also invited eight rickshaw  drivers she met on the street. Wrånes became fascinated both with the bicycles themselves,  which seemed like ornate, practical sculptures, and with the chaotic traffic, and she wanted to put  the drivers’ skills to the test. Each driver drove one or two singers. Varying in tempo, pitch, and  volume, the composition was divided into various sections featuring improvisation within a strict  framework. Since the singers were not allowed to direct the drivers, the normal hierarchy between  driver and passenger was challenged.
